Time Frame

The Review of Environmental Governance will be completed within one calendar year. There are four main stages of the review:

Phase One

The panel conducted a consultation exercise by creating a forum for dialogue and examining written viewpoints from interested parties and the general public.  We held public meetings during April to August 2006 to gather views on the best model for the future of environmental governance in Northern Ireland.  These meetings were recorded and transcribed so that a published record could be posted on the Review website.

Phase Two

Study visits to other jurisdictions are being undertaken, to gain an understanding of the means through which environmental governance is administered in other parts of the UK and Europe.  On these visits, we meet with a wide range of government agencies and Non-Governmental Organisations and glean a great deal of useful information.

Phase Three

Once views had been gathered, the panel published their interim findings report. at the end of summer 2006.  It is published in hard copy and is available on this website.  All interested parties and the general public are invited to comment on the panel's preliminary recommendations.  We would encourage interested parties to post comments or observations on the Review message board.

Phase Four

The panel will continue to take views throughout the process.  The public and interested organisations will be afforded a further opportunity to meet with us through one or more round table events.  The dates and venues of these meetings will be available on the Review website in due course. The Panel will submit a final report, including their recommendations for the future of environmental governance in Northern Ireland, to the Minister of the Environment.  It is anticipated that this will be at the end of the first quarter of 2007.
